Stealth Water Park Adventure

“A toddler can do more in an unsupervised minute than most people can do all day.” —Unknown

Introduction:

When it comes to parenting, it's often said that you should expect the unexpected. But even with that mantra, I was not prepared for what happened when my kids "destroyed" my dream home - a home I had worked hard to save for over 15 years. What happened was definitely unexpected, and certainly cringe-inducing; but if we can find humor in this unfortunate situation, then perhaps something positive can come out of it.It isn't every day that you save for your dream home for 15 years, and a little over a week later, you're kids destroy it. Yep, it's me, and it happened. I have the insurance claim to prove it.

As mom tends to do, we moved in, and I decided the carpet needed deep cleaning. I needed to dry the carpet ASAP—so the whirling of loud fans filled my home.

Let me introduce the two main characters of this story: my two-year-old twin daughters.

It had only been ten days since we moved in, so no baby gates, locks on doors, or outlet covers had been installed. The girls, I thought, were checking out their new room or playing with their older sisters. Big mistake!

I busied myself, organizing and unpacking the numerous boxes in the kitchen. I wonder if I heard water tinkling from the ceiling first or glimpsed water dripping from my dining room chandelier.

Screaming my children's names, I tore upstairs in a mashup of five names tongue-tied together.

I flew past the three fans and newly cleaned carpet and followed the sounds of rushing water coming from my master bedroom.

As I walked toward the bathroom, the carpet squished between my toes as I approached the door. There the twins had turned my master bath into a full-blown splash pad. The twins had managed to turn the spigot of the tub entirely around, so instead of the water flowing into the tub, a full stream of water was pouring onto the tile of our bathroom floor.

I slid over to the faucet, shut off the water, and immediately grabbed as many towels as possible. I began throwing them on the floor while calling for my older daughters to come and help. This water world was an all-hands-on-deck emergency.

All the while, the twins innocently splashed in two inches of water they had created.

Having lived in our home for only ten days, I called my insurance agent to report a flood.

I can't be mad; so many things aligned for them to pull off this level of creative damage. Fans covered the sound of running water, doors open so air could circulate, mom busy unpacking, older sister enthralled in their new spaces. So the twins won with the stealth water park adventure.
